Guardian Homes

What is a guardian home?

Our number one priority in breeding dogs is for the welfare of our parent dogs. To ensure we are able to give these dogs the best possible home life, while being able to expand and produce the best possible puppies, we like to limit the number of dogs we have living in our home. We offer a guardian program where qualified families will receive a high quality puppy/dog at no cost while we retain the breeding rights. In this way, our dogs can fill their number one purpose of being a beloved member of a family, receiving all the care and attention they deserve, while also breeding healthy puppies for other families.

Guardian families are expected to properly care for their new puppy/dog physically and financially. We will cover all costs associated to breeding and care for/own all litters produced by guardian family dogs. Guardian dogs will remain your forever family pet but will come to us every so often to sire/whelp their litters.

What are the qualifications?

Guardian families must have:

  • A fenced yard
  • live within Salt Lake County
  • reliable transportation
  • a flexible schedule

Guardian families must be able to:

  • Provide a puppy/dog with proper health care, nutrition, and exercise
  • Properly train (both professionally and at home) and socialize a puppy/dog with appropriate tools and methods
  • Keep up with grooming (both professionally and at home) including regular brushing/bathing

specific requirements for a female

Once the dog is of age, has passed all of her health testing, and is ready to breed (typically on her second or third heat cycle), guardians will transport her to/from reproductive facilities for progesterone testing and mating purposes. After she has been bred, she will return to her guardian family who will care for her during her pregnancy. She will then come back to us a week before she is due to whelp her litter. Guardians must be able to detect a heat cycle (notifying us the first day blood is seen in each cycle) and keep females away from intact male dogs during this time.

Breeding female dogs will spend at least 8 weeks per year in our care to whelp, raise, and wean their puppies (guardian families are welcome to visit). Breeding females may whelp as often as twice a year. Guardian families will receive financial compensation at the conclusion of raising a litter.

Females will retire after having 4-5 litters. Once retired, the female will be spayed, courtesy of us, and ownership signed over to the guardian family.

Specifics for owning a male

Once the male dog has passed all of his health testing and is ready to breed (when optimal sexually maturity has been reached), our male dogs will spend a few days with us when needed for breeding a female within our program. Guardians must be able to keep male dogs away from intact female dogs in heat.

When needed for stud services outside of our program, guardians will take the dog to/from reproductive facilities within Salt Lake County for semen collection and insemination appointments. A stud service will typically require 2 visits to a reproductive facility. At the completion of stud servicing to outside programs, guardians will receive $200 as a thank you for their time.

Males will retire at around the age of 5-7, Once retired the male will be neutered, courtesy of us, and ownership will be signed over to the guardian family.
